Nontraditional Employment for Women, U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau and the NYC District Council of Carpenters Women’s Committee partnered in the Fall of 2010 to offer a special pilot mentoring project to women carpenters. We are starting our second round this Spring.
The goal of the mentorship program is to support women and see all women reach Journey-level and beyond, while learning how to play an active role in your future as an informed union member.
This program is open to any woman in the NYC District Council of Carpenters, not just NEW graduates. The mentorship program is designed to help support you and provide you with one-on-one guidance on unique and often difficult issues that you face on the job, in the industry, and/or at union meetings.
As a carpenter you may have questions regarding:
Shaping
Union structures
Pensions
Networking to find work
As a woman carpenter you may have questions regarding:
Avoiding work situations that block you from learning new skills
Feeling unable to speak up in union meetings
Sexual harassment
These are just a sample of the types of issues that can be discussed with a mentor.
The mentorship program will run for 6 months, and both mentors and mentees will be expected to be in contact with each other at least twice a month. NEW will also check in with you by phone once a month for the duration of the program. We will also have a mandatory introductory session, mid-term session, and final session.
Your years of experience and apprentice/journey-level status does not disqualify you from applying to become a mentor or mentee. Anyone can apply to be a Mentor, Mentee or both!
If you are interested in being considered for the Mentorship Program please contact Jully at 646-257-5097 or jmerino@new-nyc.org for an application.
